The weather does not sound good for the next few days. Everyone please drive safely and don't take any chances just because it is Christmas. Plans and get togethers can be changed and made up. I remember a blizzard over Christmas quite a few years ago. I got snowed in at work and had to work quite a few shifts in a row. People were stuck out in the snow and we were so worried about them but they were all safe.
With the ice predictions we need to be thankful for the generator in town. We are very fortunate to have this. What a Christmas if we are all stuck at home but imagine being stuck at home in the dark without any electricity.
We can only hope the storm misses us. Stay warm and safe.
I'm trying to tell everyone about the New Years Party. I so hope there is a good turnout. This is such a wonderful beginning of marketing and helping our community. My hat off to you Cindy for stepping up to the plate and doing this. This is what we need for our community. I'm planning on bringing treats, don't know how long I can stay because of my health but I am planning on being there and bringing some friends. Let's hope for good weather.
Oh, I thought of something else sometime maybe could be done here in Dayton. What about a Christmas Light Parade. I saw one on TV and remembered that Boone has one of these. That would really be neat. Just some food for thought. I'm not sleeping well tonight so this blog is having to put up with me posting.
Thank you for being a voice for this New Year's celebration. I hope the weather is not as bad as they say it is going to be this week. Drive safely everyone! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
Just got a telephone call from the Webster County Seriff saying that travel is not advised. I believe they said from midnight tonight until thursday at midnight and it could be updated. They said they were unable to get out to help some people during the last storm. I think this is a great thing. Please everyone take heed of this. I know because of the Holidays it is a big temptation to take more chances but it's just not worth it. They did recommend to have a full tank of gas and a survival kit. I know you can make your own kits or KCCI had some really nice ones pretty reasonable. Please everyone stay safe.
Also the City's Web page is starting to have more information, I see where all of the City ordinances are downloadable. That's nice. It is also updated in some other area's. Still has the canned pictures but I'm sure at some point these will be changed. Thanks to whomever is updating this. The ordinances should help people to understand what is going on. The site is www.daytonia.govoffice2.com
Remember keep safe and warm. The forecast is pretty scary. Hope we do not get all that ice and snow. It would be nice if it would miss us but I doubt it at this point. I know I have heard of many people canceling or post poning their Christmas plans.
Kendra, I also love the way the blog has become positive. I knew that someday, in some way it could become a helpful tool. I always believe that things don't always have to be negative. I know everyone may not always agree (but this makes and interesting world) that we can do in sensibly and not attack each other.
Thanks Chris for updating the web page. I will thank you in person when I see you.
Weather not much better nor does it sound like it's going to get better. Everyone stay safe and warm.
I just want to say going into this ice storm I am so thankful that as a city we have generator. I can't imagine going days and even weeks without electricity. That's what happened to some people during that ice storm in Oct. I can't remember the year.
I know on the news they are talking about loosing power.
I know it would be easy to get depressed over the weather and it being Christmas but we need to remember the real reason for the season.
I think the (I hope) the snow is finally over until Wed. Wow what a bunch of white. I don't know where we will put anymore snow so I think we've had enough until this melts.
The long term forcast sounds pretty good for New Years so it should be good weather for the party. I am going to get my treats ready. Please everyone bring your children, grandchildren, neighborchildren. If not please donate some treats. Doing little kind things make us feel better. Just think positive and it brings a smile to our faces and will add days....If we are positive enough years to our lives.
I have to reflect some about this past year and have seen some bad, but I do think it is starting to look better everyday.
I don't know what Cindy needs help with but you could post here or do some checking and I'm sure anything would be appreciated.
Let's work to make this be very successful and to become an important part of our community. We are so fortunate that we have someone like Cindy who has taken this on and is doing such a nice thing for our community. I would like to give Cindy a great big thank you for steppping up and doing this.
Aw shucks....Thanks, DaytonTiger. I do think this will be a fun time. Really, if people just come and pitch in, help the kids do the crafts, play the games, converse with each other; sort of like you would do at any family gathering, I feel it will be successful. Please save your glass jars and water bottles for some of the crafts planned...great recycling opportunity!
Kendra: Thank you for the write up in the newspaper. Daytonites.....I really think it could be a fun time for people in our community. We will have some crafts for the kids, movies, board games, and karoake. I'll provide chili and beverages. Hoping you all will bring snacks to share as we ring in the new year. Even if you can't hold out til midnight and the mock champagne toast, please come share part of the evening.
DaytonTiger: Yes, just the individual water bottles and any size glass jars. They do not need to be canning jars, just any size glass jars (mayo, pickle, baby food). I am looking forward to seing everyone!
Good New Years Eve to everyone. I hope this New Year is good to everyone.
Bundle up and dress in layers and come to the community center to what sounds like a really fun evening. What a great way to celebrate the New year and to honor and have fun with our family and especially the children. They are our future.
I have my treats made and have some water bottles but alas only one jar. So EVERYONE please come and enjoy the evening and help in making a "safe and fun" New Years Eve for the children. By doing this we are showing our respect and unity for the community in which we live and the community in which we ALL want to see succeed into the future.
Happy New Year Everyone. I hope that the year 2010 finds everyone, healthy and happy.
I sadly couldn't go to the New Years Party because of little health complication, My hip or back has gone out. But my wonderful helper delivered my treats. I hope the party was a success. I know that Cindy put lots of work and planning into it. So here is a big round of aplause for her.
I have been looking back over the year 2009, for me it is a year I would not want to relive, maybe relive some of it if I could know what I know now. It has been a troublesome, controversial year for some. I know the economy and all that has happened with loss of jobs and increase in costs of products has affected so many. We can hope and pray that this will improve in 2010. No real New Years revolutions this year just to try to get healthy and stay that way.
I wish the best for each and every person in the coming year.
DaytonTiger: Thank you for the treats. They were yummy and enjoyed by the two local people that attended the New Year’s Eve party. Yes, it was a lot of work and I spent a lot of money but the $400 I spent was money well spent in my opinion. I learned a valuable lesson. Just because people say it is a good idea doesn’t make it necessarily so and quite frankly I won’t be so quick to jump in and be the ‘doer’ next time. It obviously was not the kind of party that the most people enjoy on New Year’s Eve.
I do want to acknowledge Kevin Benson for his donation, Jim and Lavonne Lombard for coming and being with our family that night, Kristy Ott for the treats, Jason Ott for delivering them, and Kendra for writing the article in the paper. My daughter and her family even came from Iowa City because they knew how much effort had gone into the party. My daughter from Fort Dodge wanted to come in the worst way but since she had just had a double mastectomy and reconstruction on Christmas Eve day she was not able (so yes, I see there are worse things in the world than no one coming to a party!). My husband who had a heart attack in 2006 lugged heavy music equipment in and out of the cold just because I asked him to. Thanks also to Michael Corson and his friend Angie for helping set up and tear down.
I’m over it now (kind of) but you all missed a GREAT party!
Kendra: I don't even know how to say how disappointing it was. It is hard not to be negative about it, quite frankly. Trust me, after the potluck and this fiasco.....it won't happen to me again!
I'm so sorry. I was so hoping that people would come, especially with all of the hard work, and thoughtful planning. I just don't know what any of us could have or plan that would get the people to come. I really thought that this was a great idea.
I do know that I visited with someone this morning and we talked about how it is so hard to get very many people to go to things in Dayton. I don't know if it is just Dayton or if it's just the sign of the times.
I was so thrilled with you doing all of this and I am so sorry it turned out this way. I still want positive things for Dayton but I guess I don't have any ideas. I guess I find it so interesting that people were so quick to be critical of Dayton not doing anything like the other towns at Christmas, but when you try to do something they just don't come.
Kendra, I know how upsetting it was for the ribbon cutting also.
I'm just out of answers or suggestions. I just want to say how sorry I am. It's to bad that this has to happen, because then other things will never be accomplished because we are defeated even before we try. I hope someday that people realize what they miss by just not taking the time to enjoy local things. I remember going to the library bingo, the turkey bingo, all kinds of different meals at the community center and these were all fun things to do. The last two things would have been fun also.
I still think we can communicate positively and try to keep things going by doing that.
Again, Happy New Year everyone, I wish again everyone good health and happiness in 2010. Cindy we are so fortunate for our supportive families. I have added your daughter to my prayers. What a young lady with such a strong will to want to come after what she is going through. I know that her positive attitude will help her.
Cindy, I am sorry about the party and I do appreciate all that you and your family had done. I would have attended but it was so cold and I have fell several times and I have such a fear of that.
Don't give up, we need people like you to bring Dayton back, some towns just suffer from a lot of apathy. Again, thank you.
DaytonTiger: Thank you for the prayers and your support. She really is incredibly strong and I admire her positive spirit very much. Kevin: I think you are correct about apathy or an indifference. I do not blame you at all for not wanting to go out risking a fall.
If it is any consolation--the chili is amazing. THANK YOU for that. Fed my kids (and the wrestling team who come over almost every day) better than they are used to.
The chili is amazing. THANKS...... Those people that didn't come don't know what good food and the possibility of having good time with the others that live in your community. The animosity and negativty has not gotten anyone anywhere. Just made things worse for everyone know matter what your beliefs are. I think no matter what we should remain positive. I know some feelings have really been hurt during this last year but we will never get anywhere or accomplish anything if we continue to try to hurt each others feelings. It does not accomplish anything. So please let's not go back to this negative crap I don't possiblily think it makes you feel any better.
Kendra we enjoyed the chili also and I really apprecute the fact that Cindy thought of us to share. Thanks.

It is snarky comments such as yours that tear communities apart. You might think just a few negative words won't matter, but negativity breeds negativity. My guess is that you're a glass half empty kind of person. It is unfortunate when people who consistantly see the glass as half empty feel the need to tear down those that see the glass as half full.
The city of Dayton is very fortunate to have someone like Cindy who can look for the positives in every situation. If there were more citizens like her, the community would be much better off.
I also agree with 7:10PM. I haven't heard the word "snarky" in a very long time. I'm glad you used it I always did like that word and had forgotten about it. :)

I think we as Cindy does, discuss the issues with an open mind and without all of the negative nasty remarks. I think these remarks, speeches and articles have went way to far last year and hurt many many people. I think if people notice some of the people that were attacked most viciously are trying to be open minded for the community. Maybe we hould all ttake heed and learn a lesson from this. I don't believe in the taking sides thing because in my nind there is only one side the betterment of Dayton.
I think the issues do need to be discussed responsibility as adults. None of us need this negative name calling stuff that only breeds more negativity and really hurts others. Well let's all buck up; and work grying to as least be pleasant when we don't agree and discuss our reasons for our own opnions.
Wow!!! What wonderful posters. I am impressed. You should go into the business. This should really get everyone's attention. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't spell check as you can all tell and left out some wordsl. SorrY.....
