Tuesday's Edition

I find it unforunate that The Dayton Review decided to rehash last week's Des Moines Register article, as well as a portion of the quotes the city attorney made at the city council meeting. As stated in a previous posting, I thought the city attorney and The Des Moines Register opened Pandora's Box. I am not sure why the decision was made to reprint the same story, a story which does not advance the current debate.

I think there are more important issues out there. For example: the new budget/bond issue.

However, this week's story is already over a week old.

  1. I have heard that there are two councilwomen and a councilman that have some skeletons in their closets also. Maybe their mistakes and their lifesyles need to be printed so all the town and their families can read them. Does the editor have any problems, maybe someone should find out what caused his divorce. There are many issues that should be brought out, and maybe they will be. As someone said, there are no victors in war, but many casualities. Maybe the editor should get his story straight, but his paper is known as bird cage paper.

  2. Does the Dayton Review hold an up-standing view in the eyes of people in Dayton? A resounding NO, all I ever hear is it is made up of manufactured s--t that the editor thinks up, take your medicine Mr. Schrieber.

  3. Didn't this article cause enough problems last week in the Des Moines Register. Did it not also cause problems for those that were not even mentioned in this article. I also agree that we need to discuss the bond issue. What is going on there? I also noted in today's Dayton Review that all of the print for everything is very clear with the exception of the printing of the city budget. This is so blurry it almost appears to be on purpose.

  4. What is the circulation numbers now for the Dayton Review? I have not saw this printed lately. Mr. Schrieber I would go on Courts Online and look yourself up first.

  5. Everyone on the councel needs to think of what they have done in there past before they begin printing or saying things about others pasts. That includes Mr. Schriber, Kendra, Richard, Paula, Norm, Kevin, Kevin and out city attorney. None of them need to make low blows at others past.

  6. Doesn't any of the good outstanding citizens of Dayton care about what is going on in your town? Don't you care about your streets, on how your tax dollars are being spent? Do you like what has happened lately? Well, if you have answered no to any of the above, circle election day in Nov. and vote Mr. Dielh and Ms. Gallentine out of office. I am sure their pasts will be aired by then.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Maybe it's time for Mr. Schrieber to retire. His birthday is online and he's the right age. It's time to get someone in Dayton that knows how to run a newspaper. Years before the graduates had front and center attention from the review. Not this year.........

    ReplyDelete
  8. Did we really need to read the register article again? No! Why is the paper continuing to air a persons past when it has no bearing on what is currently going on. No ones past should be aired because it has no bearing on what is going on. It does seem like some people do get the short end of the stick when it comes to opposing tax increases.

  9. People retaliate or try smear campaigns out of fear, maybe fear of losing something they want very badly. Fear of the truth. Fear manifest itself in many different forms. We have seen fear by people saying cancer is in our town, cancer is a very feared illness, so they try to manifest fear in other people by the mere mention of cancer. What are you fearful of-maybe being found out that you have raped the citizens of Dayton by spending a lot of their money on a wasteful golf course. As you see RAPE is a very fearful word also. It conjures up the vision of something being taken from you in a very violent and forceful way.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Focus on the issues! Focus on the issues! Everyone attend the council meetings, enrich your intellecual knowledge about how your tax dollars are being spent before the next election. Get to know who is spending your dollars foolishly.

  11. Oh I think I have it figured out now. The money was borrowed from the light company. That is 25,000.00. This is being added to the golf course budget. The figures are skewed on what amount is really owed on the loan. All of the 25,000 is being added into the budget so that it appears balanced and to be able to say no money will be added to taxes. BUT, you need to remember you need to meet your budget for this to come out and this is one time only loan, kind of like the stimulus package. This was really creative. The bottom line is the only answer, the only whole in one is if you meet your budget at the end of the year. So what about the next year when there is not another 25,000, what will happen then? Talk about creative accounting!!!!!!!! If anyone can clarify this for me please feel free to do so but I also would like to know where I can see the figures in black and white.

  12. It would seem like some people are fearful of something. Is the golf course worth bringing up a persons past or issuing warnings that have never been enforced before?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would like to say first and foremost I'm pretty ashamed to be a citizen of the town of Dayton. Is the character of the peoples of this small town that low that we must hash and rehash someones demons from the past? No one is perfect so no one should be casting stones. These offenses I have read about in the paper don't even have anything to do with our hike in property taxes, the state of our roads, and whether or not the city of Dayton should try to revive the dead bird, which is the golf course. The issues are being avoided, period. So lets stop the personal bashing and printing of some past misfortunes of a few of the citizens of Dayton, we can figure out a way to find a middle ground and work these issues out like civilized members of a community. I'm not kidding, the character of many in this town makes me sick...

    ReplyDelete
  14. 8:43 PM - So it seems that this one loan will make the golf course look solvent for this year? We may have this same problem of having increased property taxes if the golf course does not make money next year? Seems like filling a hole by digging another hole.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What is the new budget/bond issue DO was talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  16. We do need to focus on the issues. I have been saying this for along time. It's pretty hard to have people do this when articles are reprinted from the Des Moines Register. I do not understand the budget/bond issue. I would really appreciate someone explaining this to us. To: 8:46 we really do need to come to a common ground somehow and work this out. I have been saying this over and over again. To 8:43 this is a very interesting way to look at the budget. I hope someone also explains this to us. We do need to remain on issues and try as hard as possible to remain positive. I am very sorry that these articles had to hurt people. It is time for this to stop is any healing of our community can happen.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 8:43pm Bingo!!!!! That is exactly what I was trying to point out. It appears to me to be a temporary fix. We probably will have these same problems next year, because there probably will not be another bail out or loan available.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The bond issue has something to do with the loan not being for 20 years but for 15 years thus increasing the payment by approx. 2700.00.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also noticed that the budget was faded and blurry in this weeks Review. It is interesting that after the debt payment from the $ 25,000 light board loan is made the rest of the loan will go into the golf course budget to offset any losses.

    ReplyDelete
  20. How long does this have to go on with the same people running the golf course ? They ran it into the ground before the city bought it, Now the same people are running it again. Why don't they get some outside help The mayor has been on the golf course board since 2003 how long does it take before he wakes up . that is 6 years he has had to make his ideas work

    ReplyDelete
  21. If this is true they might try to keep the golf course under city ownership for at least one more year. If that is the case I really hope there is some kind of business plan that the group will share with the city. Anyone heard anything more about the ad hoc group?

    ReplyDelete
  22. WOW--I turned on my computer to write a column about "ten positive things I would to help Dayton accomplish and decide to check the Observer--and I'm threatened again. It's hard to be positive when your morning starts with anonymous threats. See how negatism spreads? At least they didn't attack my kids.

    theatregoddess

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kendra, I don't think you need to feel threatened. I was also worried about the negativity spreading because of the reprinting of the article. I wish you would write about the "ten positive things you would like to help Dayton acomplish". I think some of the earlier posts were done out of frustration.
As I am always saying let's try to stay positive and everyone work together.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kendra - As many would agree, I don't think your past or anyone elses past should be brought up. I think it is really unfortunate that someone decided they could bring someone's past into the mix. This all happened last week. Then to top it off this week's Review decided to run the story again. What was the point? I think all of us could have read the story when it originally came out. I was hoping we could move on after last week and get to talking about going forward.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wrote it--but I only ended up with seven. You can all read it in the Dayton Review in June 17 right before you line your bird cage with it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is like kicking a dead horse. I really wonder how Mr. Benson, Mr. Vegors and Mr. Carstenson feel about having all of this hashed and rehashed again. I am sure they feel their issues are important. They were reporting their issues and look what it got them. Long ago issues that are not important were brought out in two newspapers. It was not good enough to have it in a one sided story in the Des Moines Register but then reprinted in the Dayton Review. I for one think no one's past unless it affects what they are doing today should be brought up. Kendra no one on here has attacked you and they would certainly never attack your children. There are several posts at the begining of this topic that brings up all of the council members and mayor but they do not personally bring anything out. I don't think this is the style or the mind set of most who post on here. I feel that it has gone way to far with the Dayton Review reprinting this story. What is the purpose? Is it to completely destroy everything and everyone in Dayton. I saw someone mentioned the Ad Hoc Committee. When Mr. Schrieber called people to come to this meeting he said something needed to be done. The Mayor had completely lost it by his appointments to the park and rec board. Then we read and story that they met and then nothing more. Then this story is reprinted. What is really going on and what is his purpose. I would never stoop so low as to attack others past, as has been done in the last two weeks so no one needs to fear me. I just have one question. Why wasn't all of this stopped before it happened? It was not very well thought out to start the attacking. Maybe the person, people that started all of this should have thought of the ramifications to others before they wrote. and were quoted for these articles, they should have thought what it would do to others. No Kendra I know you didn't have anything to do with starting all of this. But let's just think about how many people have been really hurt in the last week and one half, I hope those who decided to do this continue to feel good. The one person who does need to go is the city attorney. He sure represented the council well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kendra,

I'll read your seven points in your column. I don't have a bird:). All of us need to hang in there and over come all of this. As I have said before let's all just get back to the issues.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I meant to also say along with issues could we please work on some solutions. Let's don't go down the road of bringing up what's long gone. We all need to keep our heads high and find "common ground"

    ReplyDelete
  29. "No one on here has ever attacked you and they certainly wouldn't attack your children." I respectfully disagree. The statement "I have heard there are two councilwomen and a councilman that have some skeletons in their closets. Maybe their mistakes and their lifestyles need to be printed so all the town and their families can read them."

I think that's an attack. You're right--no one on here has ever attacked my children. That was on the DMRegister site--but it was still a local person and that hurts.

I just want us to all (in the infamous words of Rodney King) to "just get along."

    ReplyDelete
  30. I know someone who wears a shirt that says,
"Why can't we all just get along", it was given to this person because that is what they always say. I really wish this person was able to help us with all of this, but unfortunately they are not able to do this at this time. Maybe we could follow their example and of course (Rodney King) and try.

    ReplyDelete
  31. We can't just get along because of all the issues and nothing being resolved. No one seems to want to resolve any thing, just reprint the same old shit. Maybe you all should get off your butts and come to a common solution. Or better yet, decide to do something different. Kendra, you are a council person, spear-head something positive. Maybe the people would give up on retaliation if they saw something positive or constructive. If I were the ones that were attacked, I don't know how I would feel. What has been done is horrific. I hope all have looked at their own lives, and those who have not sinned can throw the first stones.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Maybe the article is true, maybe the three are stating half truths, but the truth is that, they are getting all the documents from the city under open records laws and the city is giving them falsified documents. What is the city trying to do, hide what was really spent on the golf course. Come on people claim your money, it is being spent recklessly and being covered up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If they try to keep it open for another year, there has to be a demand for accountability. No more guesses on who pays memberships, who has paid for their golf shed rent, an audit at the end of the year, no fabrication of records based on half truths. We need to know the truth and how can we expect it from the Mayor's hand-picked park and rec board.

  34. I am happy to say that I DON'T live in Dayton.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm happy and proud to say I DO live in Dayton (even if I'm adopted to the town-LOL).
Just walk away from all of this for a while; you'll have a better perspective on things, I can tell you from experience.
And...I'm still not going to take up regular posting again. Just thought I'd say something positive. This blog needs it after reading the past 2 days. (Still reading, not posting :) )

  36. To 8:26 this morning, The Mayor has not been on the board since 2003. He has been off the board since 2005 contrary to what the web says. If everyone would use the energy to turn this thing around and only give the facts I think we as citizens could make this work and benefit the City of Dayton!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi Taxpayer, I'm glad I live in Dayton also.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, if you are the Mayor's citizens, or his parks and rec board, you can make it work by using the town's money to fund your own personal recreation at anybodies cost. Put up a plan or shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To: 6:13, I open for suggestions, how do we do this?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would like to be a part of this peace keeping mission. What can we do to bring opposing opinions to some sort of resolution? I know I personally have been hard on Mr. Benson and Mr. Vegors and I still believe in what I have spoken about before but we are getting nowhere in a real big hurry. As far as the golf course goes, I am absolutely not in favor of throwing good money after bad but I also realize that a business typically does not make money (or even break even) the first year or two. I also believe all of the dissension now is not entirely about the golf course. Truth be told, I may have chosen different park and rec board members (just to avoid any inference of conflict of interest) but we need to work with the hand we are dealt. I would like to explore the possiblility of a community healing meeting. Maybe a community potluck....We would need a strong personality to host this though as I wouldn't want it to turn into another venue for personal attacks. Just a thought......

    Cindy Corson

  41. Nice letter and nice idea Cindy. I'll try to be there if you pull something together.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ms. Corson - Thank you for the suggestion. I am glad to see a few ideas being thrown around to help getting Dayton back on track.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That is a good idea Cindy, I would sure try to attend if something was put together.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think the potluck is a good idea, I also agree we would need some strong leadership. I also think it would be great if we could all meet somehow and make some agreements and then have a celebratory potluck.

    ReplyDelete
  45. (6:13 pm) referance the mayor and him being on the golf board. If he wasen't on the board then why is he listed as a director on the board on the beer and wine license application since 2003 till now (every year) look it up that would be application BB0029124. corporate ID number 76168 federa ID number 452-0823900 If he wasen't on it ,is that legal to lie on an application to the state of Iowa and say that he is ? and cindy anyone that would join in and attack a council man when you know that they represent other people ( well you keep you potluck)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Cindy--great minds think alike: I, too, think a community potluck would be awesome. I suggested it once when Emmanuel was having big time problems and was shot down--so I was reticent to suggest it again.

6:50 AM--I have no idea what that last sentence means. Maybe reread and repost?

  47. To: 6:50 am You are right I looked up the beer and wine application and the mayor is listed as director.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Does this mean he is still on the board or just listed as the director on the application?

    ReplyDelete
  49. (2:50 pm ) pm He was listed on the board from 2003 till the city took it over. Now he is listed as the only one as contact person for the country club liquor license for the city. Again I say how can he be listed as a board member on the liquor license if he wasen't on the board

    ReplyDelete
  50. (6:50 am ) sorry Kendra I didn't know you were having a hard time understanding . I guess the way the city keeps there books I thought you might be able to understnad if there was some letters missing . How are you at figures. IT MEANS I DON'T WANT TO GO TO CINDYS POTLUCK

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's good you don't want to come...we only want people to come that are going to be willing to work things outs, not be NEGATIVE...

    ReplyDelete
  52. So lets be POSITIVE lets start out with an APOLOGY to Kevin and Norm and let them have there opinion and speak for the ones they represent. And lets make the numbers match not by copy machine but by calculator. I'll explain this last sentence to you later Kendra

    ReplyDelete
  53. Kendra is actually pretty well-read and doesn't generally need sentences explained--as long as they have a coherent subject and verb.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Back to the subject and issues. We have been making some progress let's don't lose it all here. Please and Thank you
