Interesting Read

I wanted to post an article that I thought was very interesting and some of the points made in the article are directly related with the city of Dayton owning the golf course.

  1. I completely agree whether you are democrat or republican, government should never be involved in running a business. This article shows it has not worked in history and it is certainly not working today.

  2. I have always felt it is bad for the town to own eating establishment and have other ones in the same town.

  3. Great Article. Absolutely right on target about our golf course, the mayor and three of his flunkies are entirely too ready to spend taxpayers money on their little pet projects. I'll bet they wouldn't spend that kind of money if it was theirs and they were trying to take care of their families.

  4. I agree with this article. It does show the cons of government involvement in owning businesses. I don’t think I would say three flunkies. Governments use other people's money. Corporations play with their own money. I found that statement to be completely true to the issue we are dealing with.

  5. WOW--I thought being called "little missy" was a slam. Maybe I should change my sign in name to "flunky" now. I think Richard will laugh at me being called his "flunky"--I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm a huge pain in the ass. I'm always telling him my opinion on this, that, and the other thing--I just generally don't do it publicly at meetings.

On a completely different topic: the former home of Brad Buckley was completely overgrown and it is alumni banquet weekend. Neighbors got together to mow and weed--without any asking or any payment of any kind. Now--that's what I call Small Town Awesome!! And that's why I live in Dayton. Maybe we all need to remember this more often.

  6. Kendra,

I hope you noticed I took issue with the "flunky" comment. I know you would never be anyone's "flunky". I think sometimes being a pain in the "ass" is o.k. I doubt you are that either but I think keeping our own opinon is very important. What a wonderful thing that the Brad Buckley home was cleaned up. I'll have to drive by and see. Hat's off to all who did that. Thanks.

  7. By the way I imagine that quite a few people probably think I am a pain in the "ass" also.
I was just thinking that clean up day is in June. I wonder since the alumni banquet is always on memorial weekend if maybe the clean up day could be moved up a little earlier, since so many people come back to town for the banquet. It's just a thought. Maybe there is a really good reason for having it in June.

Kendra, back to "And that's why I live in Dayton" is why I would like to see this division ended. It would nice have everyone come to common ground. Not completely agree that will probably never happen. Small towns are struggling. We want to do everything we can so that we do keep our young people and others wanting to live here.

  8. The issue is the golf course. If we keep getting jabbed with higher taxes, people will have to move out of Dayton. Young people will never come back because of the cost to live here. When they are paying back student loans and looking for a job it won't make a difference that Dayton has a City owned golf course it will be if they can afford to live here. So what is going to happen if the golf course does not make money this year?

  9. " has a government entity ever competed successfully on a level playing field with private companies? I don't know of one."

This is why when there was a private buyer for the golf course this should have been considered. This what upsets me so much.
If this would have happened Dayton wouldn't have this fight going on.

  10. I live in Ogden and am glad I do. Does Dayton know how stupid the Des Moines Register article made the your town look. I mean the whole town. How many towns do you see putting all their dirty laundry out for the whole world to see.

  11. There is a special city council meeting tomorrow at 2:00PM. I think regarding an amendment to the Golf course Budget.
