A open thread for discussion of all Dayton things going on in June including the council meeting last night.
P.S.: I have had full comment posting on for awhile. I will continue to ask anyone who posts to be very respectful to others and other person's opinions.
What is new in Dayton?

ReplyDelete"Kendra's Kid" name is CODY and he isn't even in TOWN--he's in Decorah and has been for almost a week. And--oh yeah--he DOES have a license--got it back the last day of May.
ReplyDeleteAnd--NONE of the political signs were placed incorrectly or illegally. Go to any town in Iowa and you'll see the same thing. The city attorney helped me place the signs--don't you think she'd have said SOMETHING if they were illegal.
I was getting on here to tell you all to THANK Norm Vegors if you see him for all the extra hours he has been giving to the city--he is spending ALL DAY, EVERY DAY working with the contractors to make sure the water project is done correctly and cost-effectively. Norm and I don't always see eye-to-eye, but he's giving his heart and soul to the city right now and deserves thanks and appreciation--not a nasty post like this.
by the way--you spelled "Ordinances" incorrectly; Kendra's should have an apostrophe; and it should be "an" atv.
Apparently you are not only mean-spirited and a coward (by not signing your name), but also not very bright.
WOW--i almost feel sorry for you. Almost

Ugh........ to the person who's comment I deleted, please don't be an idiot.
ReplyDeleteEven though we don't agree with every person in the world, we should be respectful to each other. Our disagreements should be constructive not petty and ignorant.
Thank you to Kendra for setting things straight,no one needs to be taking personal blows on anyone and thank you MR. Montag for the deleted post! Our town should be striving to be better and the people of our town should be working together as a whole, not taking low blows on certain individuals. As for the ATV's open your eyes a little wider, they are all over in town and my concern would not be Mr. Vegors but the others who are going to fast and spinning around corners. We are a small town and in my opinion we there are too many disputes and arguments about things in our town. Everyone needs to sit back and take a deep breath, look around to see how they can contribute to the positives of this town.
ReplyDeleteMr. Montag has invited me to post some of my writings in the forum, since I am taking a break form "Coffee Break" in the Review. THANK YOU--I was looking for a creative outlet. Below is what was to be my farewell column. Glenn wanted to edit it so much it was hardly recognizable--so I just pulled it. It was to run next week.
ReplyDeleteKENDRA WHO?
I’ve decided to act like Gary Trudeau and take a break. You all know who Gary Trudeau is, right? The husband of TV journalist Jane Pauley and the creator of the Doonesbury comic strip, which debuted in 1971. In 1983, Trudeau took a 22-month hiatus from the strip. He returned in late 1984, recharged and more creative than ever. Today, Doonesbury is still going strong.
I have been writing this column for about eight years and, quite frankly, at this moment in time I don’t have much more to say. I’ve preached liberal politics, told you about my amazing children, and dissected public policy until I am blue in the face—and many of you are red-faced with steam coming out of your ears!
I am ready—for the summer at least—to take a stab at being just “Kendra who?” After awhile, being “Dayton famous,” as I sometimes call my status, gets pretty tiresome. There are people out there that don’t even know me, but who really, REALLY don’t like me. For example, Josie has a little friend she wants to spend the night. The friend’s mother, however, won’t let her because the mom doesn’t like me. I am, naturally, a little disturbed by this because I’ve never met the lady.
Another issue from which I need a break is when people get really mad about my columns—especially the ones that I feel are really innocuous. For example, in my years of writing “Coffee Break,” I have written three columns about a particular local business that I love and think is a great asset to the community. The first two received no comments at all—neither good or bad. The third received not one, but two letters to the editor and the owner threatened to pull his business from the Review. It was an innocent mistake and I apologized publicly, but the damage was done I guess.
Sometimes I write a column and think, “This is really gonna tick people off.” Naturally, I don’t mind negative responses to those; I’m askin’ for it! I’d prefer that if people disagree with my columns, they confront me and not my children—but at least I understand why they are upset. When I get yelled at for writing a piece of fluff about a snow day—that’s what gives me stress.
Another reason I feel a break is called for has to do with the current administration. In politics, it is much easier to criticize than to praise. Right now, I am relatively pleased with the Obama presidency, although he’s still a little too conservative for my taste. Come November, Republicans may gain control of Congress, compelling me to pick up my poison pen once again.
You all know I generally love attention (which explains the leopard print and super high heels in my closet), but—for now—I’d like to lay low and just be a mom for awhile. I may come back in the fall—if the readers and Glenn would like me to.
In the meantime, I will continue to write. I have had offers from two other area publications—and they would even pay me. The Review does not pay their columnists—I’ve been taking all this abuse for eight years for free!) I am thinking of starting a blog, which would be even more ‘out there’ than this column. I still feel the need to share my writing; I just need a little vacation.
So, I’m going to try to be anonymous for a couple of months and let the creative juices start flowing again. Thank you, Dayton Review readers, for all the kind (and even not-so-kind) words regarding “Coffee Break.” I am honored you took the time to read my work. Perhaps we’ll meet again sometime. Until then, have an awesome summer
Glad you are writing here. We need to keep the positive people talking. I'ts very refreshing. Thanks.
