  11. He did go a great job, he will be missed!! Dayton Tiger it was in the Review today.

  12. Thanks, everyone. He loved it too so it is unfortunate that this was the outcome. He has wanted to be in law enforcement since he was a very little boy (he was very little when his dad was the chief here)so it makes it even more tough to swallow. Please let him know you appreciated him. Trying to be positive but it is tough! He will still be working in Gowrie where they appreciate him too.

  15. Sam Addams here: Can't get into my account so will post anon for now. In answer to someone's question regarding golf course. It only lost around 16,000 the last I heard. That was last season's loss and the heat bill. Might be a little higher by now. That was couple of months ago. Go to city hall and they can tell you. On to junk vehicle ordinance. As brought up at last council meeting. It is to my way of thinking unenforcible. One part of it deals with any vehicle containing gasoline or other flammable liguids. That covers every vehicle in town. DUH. I have read the entire ordinance and it is poorly written. No I am not a lawyer, but you don't have to be to see that. Stay tuned as there might be some other breaking news one of these days. Don't ask me what because until it happens I won't allude to anything.

    ReplyDelete
  16. welcome back sam adams glad to visit with you here. I know i have read the junk vehicle ordinance but i don't remember it.

  17. The city attorney has the junk ordinance, so we are working at making it more enforceable.

FYI--my church is organizing a "spring yard raking" at the home of Jason Ott Tuesday at 7:00 if anyone wants to come. Shouldn't take long if we have a bunch. "Many hands make light work."

SO--I'm thinking of starting my own blog. Would anyone be interested in reading it? I may not be writing my column (or anything else) in the newspaper anymore--and I need a way to express myself. I'm sure it would be very random. kendra

  18. kendra i would read your blog. im sorry about your column in the newspaper. your column will be missed. you will have to post the link to your blog. dayton tiger

  19. The rumor mill going around is Dayton wants to get rid of there police dept. does anyone know if there is truth to that?

  20. "Dayton" doesn't--but there is talk. It's on the agenda for the next council meeting.

  21. i have not heard this. does it mea staff or change type of coverage. dayton tiger

  22. Does anyone have more information on this? I hear that we lost one of our reserve officers but didn't hear why so are they down sizing or what?

    ReplyDelete
  23. i rhougght our part time policeman resigned, if you geta chance go back and read the earlier posts regarding this. dayton tiger

  24. We just drove through the park and there are 6 cars there on a Saturday evening. What is the current membership. Is this number an increase or decrease from past years at this time. I agree with the prior post. The part time policeman did resign and I believe two part time reserve officers may be hired or have been hired. Are they able to carry a gun?
What is their training? I have read this blog for the past few months and thought I would comment
    A concerned citizen

  25. concerned citizen...i dont know anything about the memberships for this year. is saturday night usually busy at the golf course. im not even sure what is open at the course now, is the bar open, do they seve snacks. i do not know anything about the police hiring, it would be interesting to know. i cannot find very much of the daton review online. does anyone know how to find more. if anyone has any information please post. thanks

  27. I heard there is a group of citzens and city leaders that meet last Saturday and discussed many city issues including getting rid of Police Dept and going to a county contract. Also discussed were some strong acusation that were spelled out in Mr. Corsons resignation letter. It appears there is some corruption and very poor leadership involving or police chief and Mayor.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I bet these meetings are taking place at the bar or on the patio at the gof course. Are these acusations that Mr. Corson brought up or that the city is bringing up?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I heard about this letter too. Cindy post your sons letter on here for everyone to read. What do you think of our police chief and mayor know?????

    ReplyDelete
  30. I want to see the letter or at least know what is in it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I heard on the deck at the golf course the people that mmet on saturday are trouble makers. And that the letter is just mike doing a bunch of whinning because the mayor and police chief don't baby him at work like his mom does at home.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was rude...There are trouble makers all over Dayton...it dosn't help that most the trouble makers are the city leaders though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is easy to talk 'smack' when you can do so anonymously. Everything I post has my name attached to it, so you know exactly how I feel about any given topic. Well here goes....responding to something I shouldn't even give the time of day to..but since my name was mentioned specifically, I will do so. First of all, Michael's resignation was given to the people that needed to know and would serve no useful purpose to go public with and will not be authorized to go public. Of course there were topics in the resignation that some would disagree with. The question is asked what I think of the Police Chief and Mayor now.....here is my response: I don't agree with everything they have ever said or done. I think they are challenged to do what is in the best interests of the city, something I don't believe is served by the anonymous negative comments posted here. I also don't believe county contract law enforcement is the answer (whether my son works for the Dayton Police Department or not) and my responsible adult son has a mouth of his own.....he doesn't need me to speak for him. Ask him yourself!

    Cindy Corson

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nicely said Cindy..I think your son did a great job as a cop here. It's to bad our city leaders won't support some people around here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Corruption in Dayton? Can it be? I have lived here for over 20 years and it always has had corruption problems. I do think our current administration is more ethically challenged than most previous ones, however. Ever notice that you can ask a question at the council and usually get a "We will look into that" answer. Or a "Randy look into that" answer. By the next meeting it is all forgotten.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I should stay out of this becouse I don't live in town but I also read the letter at the golf coarse and if the 7 points are true I hope it does go public it speaks loudly about the morals of the mayor and police chief.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So where people passing around Mr. Corsons resignation letter?

    ReplyDelete
  38. i agree with cindy. we don't need to get so personal and attacking. all tis does is cause more anger and distrust. i feel if there issues brought up in a letter then this needs to be investgated by a neutral party. if there are problems they need to be corrected.

i also do not believe this letter should be made public. if his started happening with not being able rport possible problems without it being kept somewhat anonymous then no one would feel able to report problems because of repercussions, and i personally feel there has been some in dayton.

    dayton tiger

  39. i don't know about people passing around the letter. i did not know about any letter until it was written here. some how it just does not make sense of the letter being passed around the golf course. dayton tiger

  40. Happy Mother's today to all that have been blessed with children and to all that have ever helped a child. Mother's Day 2010A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary.

A mother understands what a child does not say.

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover, Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, But only one mother the wide world over.

If the whole world were put into one scale, and my mother in the other, the whole world would kick the beam.

  42. How to use reserve police officers
By Moulder and Associates Police Consultants
    Cityscape, November 2007

Many cities in Iowa use reserve police officers. Reserve officers are volunteers that can extend the services of a police department and be an important component of community policing. Any city in Iowa that has a police department can have a reserve officer program. Reserve officer service is governed by several Iowa state laws and administrative rules. The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) will provide answers to specific questions regarding the certification of reserve officers.

Q: What is a reserve police officer?

A: A reserve officer is a volunteer, and is a sworn member of a law enforcement agency. The reserve officer has full police powers, can make arrests, investigate crimes, and enforce traffic laws. The reserve officer must work under the supervision of a regular police officer. The supervision does not have to be direct, however. Both reserve officers and regular officers must be between 18 and 65 years of age, pass a medical examination and be of good moral character. They must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License, and be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development (GED) test. The reserve officer does not have to pass the physical agility tests or the Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Examination required of regular officers. The POST test examines general knowledge, reading comprehension, writing skills, basic math skills, ability to find a conclusion to information provided. The writing skills portion will examine the ability to follow directions and spell correctly. The specific test is mandated by the academy administrative rules. The reserve officer does not have to take the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test.

Q: Can a reserve police officer carry a firearm?

A: Reserve officers can carry firearms after satisfactorily completing the same course of study required for regular officers. They must also qualify on a supervised range the same as regular officers. Reserve officers may only carry firearms when they are on duty, unlike regular officers that may carry firearms at all times. A city may have reserve officers that are not armed. The reserve officer must meet all the training requirements of other reserve officers with the exception of the firearms training and qualification.

Q: How much is a reserve police officer paid?

A: Iowa law requires that reserve officers are paid a minimum of one dollar per year. Cities can pay more if they chose to do so. Reserve officers are not eligible to participate in a pension or retirement fund for their services. Cities can provide various incentives for people to volunteer to be reserve officers. The city of Cedar Falls offers any city employee an incentive of $5,000 per year to serve as a volunteer reserve officer or volunteer firefighter.

Q: What if the reserve officer is injured while on duty?

A: Iowa law requires the employing city to provide hospital and medical assistance for on-duty injuries.

Q: What happens if the reserve officer is sued for False Arrest?

A: Iowa law requires the city to provide liability and false arrest insurance equal to the insurance provided for regular officers.

Training also represents a time commitment for a reserve officer. To become a certified reserve officer, the applicant must receive 80 hours of training on specific subjects identified by the ILEA. The training must be done by an ILEA-certified instructor, but does not have to occur at ILEA. The applicant must also have 40 hours of experience in the field under the supervision of a regular police officer. The training must be completed in 18 consecutive months. Reserve officers must have and maintain a valid CPR certificate. Reserve officers must also undergo 12 hour in-service training each year.

  44. Why couldn't we have worked things out with Mr Corson. It would be nice to have some police protection from officers familiar with Dayton. Especially with things like labor day weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Reserve Officers cannot do an owi, other than that they cant replace a certified officer, and cannot be acting chief. Besides that they have arresting powers just like certified officers. Reserve officers are a good thing and give the town coverage when they normally wouldnt have any. My oppinion is that the Chief and mike can not get along. The Chief is above the reserve and makes all the choices. From what I have heard

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mike does not think he needs to listen to the Chief and thinks he can do what he wants. Well, that can not fly. A reserve is just part time help and needs to obey his Chief. Nobody is perfect in the job they do, however the CHief has done a fantastic job. Just turn on your scanner, he has gotten more arrest out of Dayton then probly any other Chief. He puts his life to the side for the City of Dayton. Dayton is a better town because of him. So, believe who you want, but I know what I believe. Mike, this is for you, when you have a boss, listen to them, it makes life easier and remember you are a reserve, not a Chief.

    ReplyDelete
  47. For the town to be so disrespectful to a family who has brought so much to a small town is so wrong. A great/loving art teacher (who by the way is pregnant) is going through way to much with her husband leaving and all, to be put through more stress because the town wants to get rid of the police department, which would just mean they have to start all over again in another town. Only certain people know the WHOLE TRUTH behind this BS and its not right that you all think you deserve an opinion when you dont know whats really being said or done. Cindy i'm sorry for your son, but he has everyone believeing he did so much when in reality he didnt do *. Maybe you all should stop blogging and starting asking the real questions to the people who are really being affected (LIKE CHRIS). THANKS

    ReplyDelete
  48. There are also bad bosses along with bad employees. I may not know all of the specifics but life sometimes is not fair. Bad things do happen to good people. As far as asking Chris, I would then need to talk to Mike and do a fair non-biased investigation. I do not believe this can be accomplished fairly by the mayor and the council. Cindy please feel free to give your position by blogging. Free speech still prevails even if it is not everyone elses oponion.

I have personally spoken with quite a few people and I have not gotten the feeling anyone wants to do away with the police department. This is a small town, concessions do need to be made for people to get along. Think what is best for the community not specfic egos. I personally think if the chief is going to be gone it would be nice to have someone familiar with Dayton and Gowrie. I hope it works out because personnel mudslinging did not help the golf course and I don't think it will help the police department.

  49. I think people need to read iowa code 80D

    ReplyDelete
  50. I dont thin that Chris has any say in what the city is doing. They hired him so he needs to listen to them as well as all the citizens of Dayton We are their actual bosses!!! As for him leaving I think it will do some good for him and make him grow up a bit!!!

  51. You know, none of you would be saying the things you are if you knew the real story. I wish there was a way for you to all know, but because of chris's love for the community he won't talk badly about the town or the people running it.

  58. To everyone:

Please be respectful of everyone in the community whether you feel you have been slighted or not.

Also I have turned on comment moderation. This means either D.O. or me have to approve ever comment posted for it to show up. This will hopefully only be temporary thing.

  59. Chris's cares about the community so much he doesn't want any one having harsh feelings about the peopl running it so he keeps his mouth shut and looks like the "bad guy"... If that doesn't how much he loves the town I dont know what will.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Have you thought that it might be a thing where he has had to try and balance both in a way that they both work?

    ReplyDelete
  61. i highly respect the men and woman that serve our country. i also respect our law enforcement.

i feel if anyone, if they are employed by the city or not, need to tell someone that can help them, if there are prblems or concerns you must fix them or it will only get bigger and bigger and blow up and become a major problem. honnesty is always the best policy any time any place any situation..dayton tiger

  62. Anonymous 10:52 AM:
I will answer you first…there is no debate that Chris has a difficult job. I believe (as do others) that Michael has also done a good job. He worked through some pretty tough times when Chris was deployed the first time (because of some ‘concerned citizens’ actions). I also do not wish for Chris and his family, the same demise that happened to our family in the late 1980’s. For those of you who have lived here for awhile, you know what I am talking about. I believe that the vast majority of people want the police department to stay intact, whatever we have to do to make that happen. I respect Chris’ position and am grateful for his service to our country. That should go without saying. I have a nephew and a niece from Dayton serving overseas right now. My brother served with an airborne unit during desert storm during which most of the time we did not know where he was (because it was so secretive)…….so I understand the sacrifices that the service men and women (and their families) make. I think we are on the same side here…just saying it in a different way.

  63. What is with all the negative personal attacks? I believe both the police chief and Michael have the communities' best interests at heart...If they didn't I can assure you they would not be so upset by the postings here. The anonymous bloggers should be ashamed of the way they are treating both of these people and their families. I am glad this site is being monitored. I am all for free speech but some of these ramblings truly serve no useful purpose except to keep things stirred up. I feel like I have lowered myself to “mean anonymous blogger” level. I’m sorry!

  64. Seeings how everyone keeps talking about this letter I'd letter to address the fact that just because Mike wrote the letter doesn't mean anything or everything in it is based on fact. So stop saying the mayor and chief of police are corrupt for hiring Mike back to keep this letter hush hush, if you knew anything about the situation you'd know that Mike was hired back to replace the chief while he was gone. Get your facts straight before posting please, your leaving a bad taste in everyones mouth.

I love how people in the communities think that they are the Officers bosses...You have no say in what goes on in a law enforcement center and you have no say on how an Officer does his job. So tell me, in what way are you his boss?
