Candidate Forum

First, I want to remind everyone of the upcoming council meeting.

Next, I would like to give all the city council candidates the chance to have their ideas/views expressed on this blog. E-mail your ideas/views to dayton.observer@gmail.com

Finally, as it is the beginning of October, I think it would be very prudent for the citizens of Dayton to know how the golf course did this past season. For instance, what changes did the Rec Board implement? What changes were successful/unsuccessful? Did the Rec Board implement a budget for each area of the golf course? It is imperative that things get figured out before next year as I think we can all agree that we do not want to continue paying higher taxes every year.

  1. To those candidates running for city council;
    I would really enjoy to read an interview and/or submitted information from all of our candidates. This would give the community the opportunity to make an educated decision regarding their vote.
    I would like to read the interview/submitted information from an accountable source so if I have questions about the credibility of some of the information, I know who is providing the information, who to question, and to the degree I trust the information that is posted. In addition, I would like to have this provided in a traditional method, such as a newspaper, that is widely available to all of our citizens.
    There may be valid criticisms of the Dayton Review, however, we are able to see who the author of the article is, we know who the editor is, and it is provided in a hard copy so we are either assured it is not altered OR we know who is accountable for the altering.
    I appreciate that online media is a growing and acceptable way to voice opions and read articles. I see this done with the Fort Dodge Messenger. The article is still available in hard print, we know who wrote it, and we know who is the editor of the paper to hold them accountable for the information published.
    I can relatively assure the candidates running for City Council that seeing their ideas or views posted on this blog will assure you will NOT receive my vote. Until the author of this blog demonstrates accountablity and is able to stand behind his/her publication I will continue to consider it an unprofessional forum. I will consider submitting your views/oppinions into this forum that you promote cowardly mudslinging.
    I agree with the Dayton Observer's idea to all submit your ideas/views where voters can compare you to other candidates and make an informed decision about their vote. Please submit your infromation to the Fort Dodge Messenger and/or Dayton Review.

  2. It would also be nice to get the financial numbers up through October (e.g. budgets, rentals, all fees) for the golf course printed before the elections.

  3. I sent a questionaire weeks ago to all three candidates (much like I did for the school board election)--the answers to the four questions will run at the end of October in the Dayton Review. They will run word-for-word and I am the one that is writing it.

  4. theatregoddess: I am glad that you are going to run the word-for-word comments from the canidates for council. I know this will be greatly appreciated by those of us that do want to know exactly where they stand on issues. I know that in the past from personal experience that some things that were submitted to the Dayton Review were changed. I know I would hate to be quoted or have my words changed to skew my opnion. I appreciate your candor and truthfullness. Thank you.

  5. To 8:48 I do not believe that this blog "promotes" cowardly mudslinging. Only it's promoted by the people that write negative nasty things, and I believe that these are the same people that say and live their lives doing negative nasty things are promoting negative mudslinging. I believe that I have heard, just not rumor many of these comments. I want to say just because I believe in lower taxes for everyone it does not mean that I against the City of Dayton or for that matter the United States of America.
    I have always wanted to see the golf course suceed. I feel awful that the food service at the Country Club had to close. It is to bad that it is still not looked at completely as running a business. In this day and age it becomming harder to sucessfully do that but I do believe it can be done.

    I see where it is felt that we have not seen the tip of the ice berg in the recession for Iowa. Let's take a lesson from the state and really watch our fiscal responsibility we don't want to end up having to cut everything just because we want our own way or that we want to help a few select people out. Let's look at the WHOLE picture.
