Is the golf course making money now in these months or what is the profit/loss at this point? Since the profit usually comes the first few months of the season with all the fees that are being brought in at this time.
From what I have been told by a reliable source it has lost another 30,000. That is not counting the approximately 80,000 more put into "improvements" this year. Go to City Hall and request a complete printout on it, if they have it yet. If I am wrong, and someone has exact figures, please let us know.
Ssamaddamslite, I agree that is what I a have also been told. It does follow history of the profit/loss of the golf course. They take their majority of their money in the first few months of operation, greens fees, shed rental and memberships, after that the profit starts dropping. So the spin we heard earlier about a profit is now a true picture that is just the best months out of a years. This is a seasonal business, it needs to be portrayed like this not just given a spin for the public. Our Mayor would like us to believe this but in all truthfulness I am starting to question the validity of his statements.
I have heard rumors that the club house will be closing. I know these are rumors and I don't want to spread them but I was wondering if they are true. I do feel bad for the employees it is very hard to lose your job. I do understand for the money loss if this is why. I also heard the employees don't know that this happening. Does anyone know the complete story. Thank you
The whole story is basically we as a community were suckered into buying a business that was going broke. It is still going broke and has many of the same irresponsible faces involved in the financial decisions as before. It is too bad people may lose jobs, but that is what happens when you have a business that won't pencil out. I heard they put a new roof on the club house. Not sure though. I really think it is high time the Mayor steps up to the plate, acts like a man and a leader and explains just how many more years of money loss we as a community need to take on this. But he has proven to be someone that won't take the responsibility of his office and look out for the taxpayers in this community. He a and few others want "their" golf course and don't care what it costs the rest of us. Anybody look to see how much their taxes went up? I did. Not too happy either. Crappy water, crappy streets, but we have a golf course.
Does the bank building have mold in it? I don't know if it does or not but if this is in question I really think before any more decisions are made that it should be checked out. This could be a potentially severe and costly problem. I do not know if this is true but it should be looked into.
YOU CANT'T BE WRONG IF YOU DON'T HAVE ALL THE FACTS. So keep speculating, and spreading rumors about on what's really going on. If you DON'T know the facts shut the hell up!
To: 6:36pm. No I do not know all of the facts. I was just wanting to bring this up so it wouldn't be a problem for the city. Believe it or not I am not against the bank building being city hall, it would be a beautiful building and it could also be a museum with Dayton memorbillia. I am not trying to start rumors. If I wanted to do that I would go downtown and start asking these questions. Since you are telling me to shut the hell up because I don't know the facts, you must know them so all you needed to do was tell me not go off half cocked. Believe it or not it is a good idea to check our things before you take them on.
Apparently 6:36 doesn't have the decency to post on a blog without getting very irate. Why do you have to tell someone to "shut the hell up?" Very original that was. Go back to school and learn how to speak with civility. The facts are that the taxes are going up because of this money losing golf course. Free memberships have been handed and are still being handed out. In a letter form the State Auditor dated 9/28/09 to our illustrious City Attorney and cc'd to the Mayor and Randy it is advised that now they are to be treated as income and taxed accordingly. That part is good. However, how can this golf course justify itself when it is handing out free memberships and or passes? I bet our Mayor once again doesn't have the backbone to post these free memberships and who they belong to. I bet that it would be interesting to see just who is being blessed by these passes. Don't believe it? Go to City Hall and ask for a copy.
8:41 My comment wasn't directed at you. Samadams; The reason I say "shut the hell up" & blah blah blah, to you is because you are the biggest "I know it all" on this blog. You always say I hear it from a good source that this is true and that is true when you don't know squat. I've probably got more schooling than you'll ever have. I'm just tired of your diarreah of the mouth. If you knew half of what you think you know you'd be dangerous. The golfcourse is not the only reason your taxes went up. They went up because of a new sewage lagoon, new water treatment plant, and the school tax. I'm not saying there wasn't an increase in the taxes due to the golfcourse, but stop laying it ALL on the golfcourse.
We didn't have someone that knew that these kind of free memberships to city employees are 1) a violation of the Iowa Constitution and 2) treated as income for tax purposes?
I think we all understand that the reason taxes historically have went up in Dayton was not due to the golf course. The last increase was in fact due to the purchase and loss of money of the golf course. Attacking people does not accomplish anything. I believe in freedom of speech. I do disagree with the person who is posting about Samadamslite. I have found this person's posts to be insightful and entertaining along with educational. There is a breakdown of taxes that is available and does come with you tax bill. We do not have control of the school tax, nor of a sewage lagoon. There could have been control of the running of the golf course and the loss of money. This is a very important concept. By the way where does education and what degree you may or may not have enter into this. I do believe in education but I also know that this is not avaiable nor even a viable choice for some people. Common sense is much more important in dealing with the issues we are talking about. Education does not make the man unless it is used wisely. Common sense and courtesy show much more of their charachter than how many diploma's they have on the wall.
Yes I have said at times "heard from a reliable source. That is usually because of one reason. The reason being that some people close to the internal workings of the city do not want their positions jeopordized. Nothing illegal mind you, but it is a lot easier to live in this town if you don't ruffle certain people's feathers. Also, I am a firm believer that in this town there is a pattern of retaliation against those looking for answers to the finances of the golf course and the city in general. True, our tax increase is not solely due to the golf course purchase or it's inability to break even. We needed a new sewage lagaoon and a new well, as well as the generators installed a few years agao. Also, the loss of money back from the utility company has contributed to our financial problems. I have invited anyone to dispell anything I have said be it what I claim as fact or what I have "heard from a reliable source'" Has anyone done that? No. I have asked the Mayor on here to explain in simple terms profit/loss of the golf course. Has he really addressed it? No. How many actually knew we were giving away memberships or passes? I have in hand a letter addressing that very thing. That is a fact It is from the Auditor of the state. Obtainable at the City Hall. Those such as 6:36 seem to take offense that I might question the honesty of those in charge of Dayton's government, but yet they can never back up anything with any kind of facts of their own. As far as educational background of myself or 6:36? Who cares. Look at the state of this country. The financial mess we are in was not caused by the blue collar workers that carry the bulk of the taxes on their backs. It was cause by educated business people, right up to and including the Senators and those that are/were President. I never questioned 6:36's education just his/her ability to engage in a civil discussion with someone that has a different opinion. I weloome 6:36 to provide any revelant information on this matter. If I am wrong then I will apologize. I have actually been hoping that by questioning the actions of the Mayor that someone would actually step up and give out info on those things I question, but all I hear is whining from people that don't agree with me. Remember: Before you give someone a piece of your mind, make sure to keep enough for yourself.
Can't refute anything I said, can you? Just more whining because I think our current Mayor is throwing good money after bad. Maybe you are one of the educated with no common sense on how to keep control of others finances. Mainly the taxpayers.
On a happier note, the well ribbon cutting/community picnic is set for Sunday, October 25 at high noon. The ribbon cutting will be right at noon, then we'll move to the potluck.
THIS IS COSTING THE CITY ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and I hope all of you that express sincere interest/concern on this blog will come and spend a few hours being social with others from your town and celebrating Dayton.
DCG is providing lemonade and iced tea. There will be some sort of entertainment. Bring a dish to share and your own table service. These can be dropped off at the community center before church if you wish.
kendra, I am glad that everything has came together for the community picnic. I will plan on coming as I have for most of other community events we have to promote Dayton. Thank you and those that have worked hard on this project. The school yard does look so much better and I see the repairs have been made.

the profit loss amount is pretty close but there were not 80,000 in improvements this year.

ReplyDeleteOh and samaddamslite; BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!!!!
Here are some facts I know - the golf course has lost money and our taxes have went up as a result.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I won't speculate on is when the golf course will start making money.
Maybe our council women is running again so she can give her son a good job and steal from our citizens.
